This probing social and cultural history of our preoccupation with weight blows the whistle on a multi-billion dollar industry that feeds on insecurityTaking the same revolutionary and ultimately inspiring approach as The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf, Losing It examines and explodes our culture's obsession with slenderness and the huge establishment that exploits our fears of being fat.A reformed dieter and an ex-bulimic, Laura Fraser traces our fixation with thinness to the images that began appearing a hundred years ago in magazines like Ladies Home Journal and Cosmopolitan. Fat History: Bodies and Beauty in the Modern West
Manufacturer: NYU Press
Brand: Brand: NYU Press
A Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in HistoryThe modern struggle against fat cuts deeply and pervasively into American culture, as evidenced by the compulsion to stay thin, or at least to profess a desire to become thin. Dieting, weight consciousness and widespread hostility to obesity form one of the fundamental themes of modern life in countries around the world. Yet, for example, while the French are renowned for their delight in all things gustatory, they are significantly trimmer and less diet-obsessed than Americans. Fat History explores the meaning of fat and anti-fat in modern Western society, focusing on the uniquely moral component of dieting in America. Tracing how standards of beauty and physical morality have been radically transformed over the past century in the United States and France, Peter N. Stearns illustrates how the contemporary obsession with fat arose in tandem with the dramatic growth in consumer culture, women's increasing equality, and changes in women's sexual and maternal roles. Contrary to popular belief, fashion and nutrition have played only a secondary role in spurring the American aversion to fat, while the French distaste for obesity can be traced to different origins altogether. Filled with narrative anecdotes and rooted in Stearns' trademark use of engaging original sources--from Ebony and Gourmet to The Journal of the American Medical Association and popularized accounts of French doctors--Fat History explores fat's transformation from a symbol of health and well-being to a sign of moral, psychological, and physical disorder.
Food Choice and Obesity in Black America: Creating a New Cultural Diet
Manufacturer: Praeger
Brand: Brand: Praeger
Anthropologist Eric Bailey uses a cultural and holistic analysis of African American food preferences to show how black Americans generally perceive health, body image, food, dieting, physical fitness, and exercise. As is true of Americans overall, black Americans are becoming more overweight and obese than ever before. So, too, they are seeing the consequences: heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, and Type II diabetes at earlier and earlier ages. Bailey offers a new cultural diet for black Americans and a prescription for working collectively, not only to understand this critical health issue, but also to establish a lifestyle strategy that will be both effective and manageable.

The False Fat Diet

This diet aims to help the reader lose weight fast by identifying the foods that make them look and feel falesly fat - and eliminating the allergy-like food reactions that cause real weight gain. It offers an easy-to-follow regime that can be tailored to the individual and contains recipes and the "no-hunger" programme that aims to bring instant results and long-term benefits. If you know you swell up after bee stings, you avoid bees. If you know a close encounter with poison ivy will leave you itching and scratching for a week, you keep your eyes open for three-leafed plants. But, according to The False Fat Diet, many of us spend our entire lives eating foods that "don't agree with us," and as a result carry around extra pounds, put up with allergies, and go through life looking older and feeling less energetic than we should. Of course, the hook here is weight loss. If you eliminate the foods that make you gassy and bloated, you can probably drop pounds instantly--up to 10 pounds of "false fat" in a week, Elson Haas says--and then keep dropping weight in subsequent weeks and months, the real fat, all without feeling hungry or deprived. Haas offers two ways to figure out if you've got food sensitivities: a medical blood test or an elimination diet, in which you cut out certain foods for a while, then gradually reintroduce them to see if they're the ones causing the problems. (The usual suspects: dairy, wheat, corn, sugar, eggs, soy, peanuts.) The False Fat Diet offers detailed instructions on how to eliminate each of these foods, and also offers ideas about supplements to take and other strategies to deal with the strangeness of not eating what are probably your favorite foods. Although the basic idea behind The False Fat Diet is counterintuitive--that the foods you like and crave the most are causing you the most severe physical problems--the potential benefits are enormous. Haas and Cameron Stauth tell numerous stories of patients (including Stauth and his sister...
